Pink slipped at Christmas

Monday afternoon I found myself in a place I never thought I'd see.
The unemployment line.
Yep.
3 weeks before Christmas I got laid off due to budget cuts.
How cliche is that?
Honestly, it wouldn't really matter to me what time of year it happened.
It's a pretty big pill to swallow regardless of the season.
Of course since then the
"It's all going to work out...."
"It's going to be OK...."
and the "Everything happens for reason...."
have been clogging up my cell phone like some bad episode of Dr. Phil.
Easy for someone else to say.
Are they going to pay my bills and make up for the loss of our larger income?
Yeah.  I didn't think so.
I am doing my best to see the silver lining.
Truth be told while I enjoyed what I did, I didn't LOVE where I worked.  The commute sucked and I was severely underpaid.  So needless to say I had been keeping my eyes open for something new.
But they say it's always easier to find a job when you already have one.
And I wasn't finding much then, so now I feel like I'm in a scary place.
Part of me is all gung ho, let's get this job search party started.
The other part of me wants to sit here on the couch in my sweatpants and cry into a carton of ice cream.
I'm sure over the next few weeks there's going to be a fair share of both.

Oh girl, I'm so sorry! Just remember that you have a very sought after skill and I'm sure you will have a new job in no time! I know, easier said than done. But remember I have been in your spot. Everything works out :)

Oh no!!!! Seriously could they not wait until after Christmas? I'm sorry if I'm repeating everything you don't want to hear but even though it won't be easy I'm sure, everything happens for a reason!

Sending prayers your way. The Lord works in crazy ways - maybe this is part of His plan and He has something even better for your family.

P.S. This happened to us RIGHT before I had our daughter. My husband lost his job AND his insurance and I was 37 weeks pregnant. Since I was a SAHM, we then had NO source of income. It was the scariest time. My husband finally took a low paying job and in the meantime, yes, we had to use some government assistance and borrow money from family. We began to sell things out of our home to pay bills. 8 months later, he worked hard and got a huge promotion that gave us financial breakthrough. I use the example to encourage you. Unemployment is the scariest thing of all, especially when you have kids. But, the Lord has a way of using what's meant to harm us and using it to advance us if we'll trust in Him. It's okay to cry and be in your sweats and get frustrated, too!!! Hang in there. One day it will all make sense.

Warmly,
Meredith at thepolkadotshoes.blogspot.com

Oh no, it never is a good time like you said, but probably is a bigger punch to the gut right before Christmas. You got this though, you'll find something bigger and better than before!! Good luck!

I'm really sorry to hear this! I have such a fear of my husband or I losing our jobs especially with a kid. I really hope you find something (even better) quickly!! In the meantime don't feel bad about taking unemployment, that's what it's there for.

Sorry girly! Hang in there and the right thing will come along. Until then, enjoy your time at home with the little guy!

Ohno, girl. I am so sorry! What the hell?! Talk about a horrible time of year to do that to an employee. Granted, there's not great time of year. I wish I had some awesome words of wisdom.

Are there any temping agencies that might be able to place you somewhere interim? Maybe there's a hygienist somewhere going on maternity leave or something. I realize that sounds random, but I don't have much advice so just throwing out what I can.

Also, check the area schools that train dental hygienists.. You didn't get your degree there, right? Either way, it's worth a shot to call them and see if they'll give you access to any potential job website they might have or resources they know of. I'm sure they work to place their own first, but it never hurts to ask..especially if you tell them you're a mom, you got laid off before Christmas, and you're the larger family income. I mean.. people have hearts..hopefully. They might know of things others wouldn't. Even if it's not a job, but maybe asking them if there's any sort of professional group where you could meet people to network with.. I dunno.

My advice isn't great. Sorry. I just want to fix this for you.

Remember everything happens for a reason and God has a bigger and better plan for you and your family!

It took me being put on bed rest for 20+ weeks and a demotion after being on bed rest and maternity leave to finally realize that I was supposed to stay at home with my 3 children.

I hope you are able to find a job that you actually love. I don't want to be one of those "Everything will work out" people because sometimes you just want someone to cry and yell and scream right along with you how unfair it is that this had to happen so close to Christmas. So go ahead, cry, and yell and scream if it makes you feel better. But don't you dare eat that ice cream!! ;) I just read your story on Katie's blog and I must say, GO YOU!!!! You look fantastic and the smile on your face shows how happy you are. From one mother to another, struggling on this weight loss journey, I am so very proud of you....AND, lastly, GO BUCKEYES!!!! :) Hang in there girlie!!

I am so, so sorry. It's never a "good time" to lose your job, but it really sucks around the holidays. I hope the perfect opportunity comes your way very soon!! Until then, enjoy the life in yoga pants!

Just saw this. This blows balls pal. No other way to say it. I hope that you find something soon!

Sending hugs, and if I could....Ice Cream! I'm sorry because that truly does suck.

So sorry to hear that you got laid off...and right before Christmas. I was laid off from my last job and even though I hated my job, it was the worst feeling ever. Here's hoping you can find something even better soon.

That's awful!! I'm so scared right now because the organization I work for has been handing them out left and right and now that I have a mortgage it scares the crap out of me! I hope you find something soon!

Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I can totally commiserate, unfortunately. A week ago Friday my husband very unexpectedly lost his job. I'm a SAHM and I'll be 36 weeks pregnant with baby #2 on Monday. Obviously he also carried our insurance benefits through his job. SUPER bad timing.

Not that this makes you feel any better, but I know the stress and uncertainty you're facing and it sucks. Big time.

Good luck!
