I never....

Before I was pregnant there were so many things I thought I would never do. It's amazing how your views can change though when you're actually getting ready to have a baby. Things I would have NEVER considered before are becoming a reality.

I kind of feel like one big hypocrite.
Pot meet kettle.

But I figure you're allowed to change your mind!

Breastfeeding

5 years ago. Gross. The entire process gave me the creeps. There was no way I was ever going to do that. Bottles and formula all the way.

Now. Not so gross. I'm going to give it a whirl. If it doesn't work out, I won't be devastated (or so I tell myself). It's convenient and certainly more cost effective. Plus it's best for baby...so why not at least try. I only get to stay home for 6 weeks before hauling back to the salt mines so I know this won't be an exclusive thing. That's why god invented pumps. I'll be like the human equivalent of a milk factory. And I'm okay with that. Weird.

Cloth Diapers

5 years ago. Ummm...no freakin' way.

Now. Do you know how much diapers cost?? Do you know how many the average baby goes through in a day?? It adds up pretty fast and it's scary expensive. Like new car....college education...Alaskan cruise expensive. Plus it is better for the environment, which honestly for me is just kind of an extra perk. I'll be the first to admit I'm not much of a recycler, judge if you must. But hello I have become thriftier lately and I'm all about saving the green for something a little more exciting than disposable poop collectors.

Natural Delivery

5 years ago. Hahaha. Those women are cuh-razy. Drugs were invented for a reason....and I say yes please!

Now. I wonder how bad it really is. I hate needles. And the thought of a scary epidural spinal tap has me thinking maybe I could be supermom.

Being a stay at home mom

5 years ago. No way. How boring. I went to college for four years to get a degree why would I sit at home and play mommy all day? Isn't that why daycare was invented??

Now. Why would I slave away at work all day to pay someone else to take care of my child? Plus hello, do you know how much daycare costs?? It's redonkulous. Unfortunately we aren't in a position right now where I can stay at home, so I will be going back to work practically from the moment little Jamie is born. I've been trying to find some good in home care cause honestly, the organized day cares are depressing. Even the nice expensive ones (which we couldn't afford anyways). Luckily we're only looking at needing someone 3 maybe 4 days a week...so that's helping ease my mind (and pocketbook) a little.

Hand me downs

5 years ago. Yeah right. I'm a working gal remember. I can afford to buy my child the very best and that doesn't include someone elses used stuff. (Wow. 5 years ago me was kind of a snob)

Now. Yes please. I have no pride. Baby gear is hardly used. The swing, bouncer, jump-a-roo AND exersaucer that everyone seems to think are all must-haves last the average baby a few short months before they outgrow it/get bored with it/maybe never even liked it to begin with. I think there will be some serious consignment store shopping and garage sale-ing in my future. The hubs is taking longer to warm up to the idea....until I showed him the price tags and then our bank account....oddly enough he's not so weirded out by it anymore. Don't worry, I haven't jumped off the deep end, the important stuff with safety hazards like car seats and cribs are new. I said I didn't have pride but a girl still has standards.

Woah. Who is this girl?? If only the me of 5 years ago could read this blog, probably wouldn't believe it! Now if none of it works out and I am still become a formula feeding, epidural having, disposable diapers using working mom....that will be okay too. My baby will be one well cared for, well loved little guy and that's what really matters, but it's kind of fun exploring other options too!

I'm on board with all those things except the natural childbirth...ummm I don't do pain...if I could have an epidural from the moment I find out I'm pregnant I would do it. haha

The cloth diapers..hmmm...not so sure about that one either. But sign me up for the rest!

You and me both kid! cept I'm all about the disposable diapers and drugs to push this little man out. Funny how things change so quickly isn't it :)?

I was always for cloth diapers, staying at home to care for my kids, hand-me-down baby stuff and C-sections! LOL... Now after witnessing the C-section recovery, I'm thinking it might not be the best option.

I was not all for breastfeeding, but I think I'm following in your shoes on that issue. You are spot on with your logic.

P.S. When I was all for cloth diapers, I was thinking the diapers I was in, which was literally a rectangular piece of cotton held on my butt with two safety pins. Um, now I see the evolution of cloth diapers and I'm AMAZED! Whoa, those things are seriously cool. Why would you buy Huggies after seeing those suckers? :-)

It is funny how things we were so adamantly against at one point in our life no longer seem like that big of a deal!!

I can relate too and I'm not even pregnant!

I'm hoping to be a SAHM... Hoping, in fact, that's why we're procrastinating. Had you told me that when I was in school I literally would have laughed at you!

I'm right there with you. I've always wanted to be a SAHM and hopefully by the time we're pregnant we'll be able to give up some things and I'll be able to do it. Cloth diapers, yea never would have thought, but as we plan for getting pregnant, I'm definitely pro cloth diaper! Can't wait to see which ones you pick to use.

Ems....your current state of mind is called "growing up and getting practical." I have all kinds of info on KC area used baby stores and stuff we will need to peruse one day when I come to visit. The small stuff goes in the washing machine or dishwasher and other things you can sanitize by hand. Sure beats having a brand new $130 swing your baby hates just sitting around. Bargains are always a girls best friend and consignment shopping can be FUN....a treaure hunt!
About the epidural, all I will say is I had one baby with and one without....they don't call it the Cadillac of anesthetics for nothing :>)I'm all for the drugs....makes your butt and legs numb, but baby is fine.
Cloth diapers....another hmmmm??? Good for you, thinking about the environment and wanting to save a few $$$$.
You're already getting older and wiser! I'm proud of you.

this is awesome!!! i definitely know what you mean on some of these issues...it's crazy how as you get older what you once ruled out completely becomes the standard of ideal...

If none of that works out, at least you can be proud of yourself for trying! As for the cloth diapers, they have so many options now! I have friends who swear by them and love them way more than disposable.

Girl!!! Things will continue to change too!!! I always wanted to be a SAHM but it just wasn't for me. However I never swayed from my need for drugs during birthing. And even after doing it I would beg for more if I ever had to do it again. LOL!!! I'm a total wimp though and I think you are a hero for going without!!! XOXO

good for you! I'm with you, used things are now okay, though I definitely still have standards when it comes to used clothes! Breast feeding was hell for me 6 years ago with my first son, I did it with my second one about 2 years ago but only because my husband really wanted me to, but now at the age of 28 (oh soooo much more mature) I know for a fact that I'll breastfeed my 3rd (and last) child because I WANT to. It's amazing what age does to a person!

I was just like you! Its great how things change. I did all those (except the natural childbirth) and I may get around to natural childbirth for number 2.

I see your point but natural birth and stay at home mommy is just not for me. It's like dieting...well and parenting for me...not a fan. Haha.

I distintcly remember having these conversations with you many years ago...I'll be interested to see how the cloth diapers work out. It's the one thing on your list I would be amenable to if I gave it some thought and research.

Brittany said...

Ohmygosh...I had/have the same options. Did you know breastfeeding makes you loose weight faster too?? Just that alone makes it okay for me! haha! One of my friends does clothe diapers and she said it's a lot of work, but it's nice in the long run. If you have the nice washers and dryers it saves money, if you have old ones, it's about the same (just saving the environment). She's obviously going to be my sitter if I can't stay home!

It's great that your open to the changes though!

Haha, I'm the complete opposite when it comes to staying at home. I've always wanted to be a stay at home mom, but now that I have a career, I realize I'd go insane if I was home 24/7. I'm definitely the career-oriented one in our marriage. But, it's okay, I've already planned out how I'll drop the kids at school, go into work at 7:30, work till 3, pick the kids up at school, and come home. For some reason, my mom, who's business I will be taking over, just laughs when I tell her that... :-)

Good for you! I'm the same way, I never thought I would want to be a stay at home mom or use cloth diapers but the older I get the more I do!

You'll continue to be amazed by how much having a baby on the way changes your perspective on life! I'm all for consignment shopping too. Like you said, the kid grows out of all those pricey items so fast, it just makes sense to buy them gently used for way less. Breastfeeding is amazing. I had trouble coming to terms with it, right up to the moment my son was born. Until then they had just been for looks and fun, I just couldn't imagine how I could flip a switch and use them to feed my child. I thought it would be weird and I'd hate it, but I was so wrong. It's not for everyone, but if it works out, there's a good chance you'll enjoy it too and you'll wonder how you could have ever even thought it would be weird.

I feel like I need to write down all of the things I am adament about now to remind myself when I actually AM pregnant, haha! It is going to be quite funny, I am sure :)

I agree with you completely on these! My hubby and I only recently decided that we'd like to have kids one day, but I have already thought about all of these things too. I am definitely going to try the cloth diapers when it's time!
